Prodosh Chandra Mitra, popularly known by his nickname Feluda, first appeared in the eponymous Bengali short story Feludar Goyendagiri (Feluda’s Investigation) in 1965. Since then, he has attained a cult following among the Bengali readership. Baba (Satyajit Ray) was always a voracious reader of detective fiction all throughout his life and greatly admired Sherlock Holmes. So when he created his own sleuth, shadows of the famous character seeped into his creation. However,Feluda is also inimitably Bengali in every possible way. The illustrations (done by Ray himself) that accompanied the Feluda books are a treasure for every art collector and this calendar is a small effort in showcasing the extraordinary drawing skills of the master. The black and white illustrations and the colourful book covers are a testimony to baba’s amazing sense of minimalism. Another important facet is that the illustrations are not just drawn for the sake of it. They always take the story forward. It is a quality that he believed all through his life and is reflected in whatever he did.
